Fight For Your Right to Comment

Previously I posted about my plan to add traffic to my site in slow increments by using various techniques. My first strategy was using comments to bring traffic to my site. So over the last 2 days I have started my day by grabbing a bottle of Wild Turkey and then putting on my commenting pants ( which aren’t pants at all, it’s actually my house coat). I look like a real picture of health, drunk by 10 AM and not really wearing clothes.

.
I get this idea that I should start doing drunken Video Posts..let me know.

While I was spreading my comment seed all over the blogosphere (why do I use that word when I hate it so much!) I noticed that some bloggers really take care of the people that comment on their blogs. They take the time to read the comments, and reply, which makes one feel like they are an important part of the blog. It gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. I also found that some bloggers go the extra mile to REALLY take care of their readers and reward people that comment.

I decided that I would share my findings with you by doing a parody of the Beastie Boys song “Fight For Your Right To Party.” If you have the song on your computer load it up now and read along:

Blog it!
.
You click on to a blog and they ask for comments so,
Will you get a backlink? The answers always “No!”
Having “Comment Love” is a really great perk
And the blogger adds “no follow” like he’s some kind of jerk
.
You gotta fight for your right to comment
.
Do you have no follow for your comments, “No way!”
Commenting often brings a backlink per day.
Man, commenting with no follow is such a drag
Now my blog threw away that damn rel tag, busted.
.
You gotta fight for your right to comment
.
Get away from a blog where the blogger doesn’t care
I’ll add your latest blog post when you comment right there
I’ve added “Comment Love” for when you want to vent.
Aw, leave your comment for Living on Adsense

You gotta fight for your right to comment
I have chosen to be one of those bloggers that takes care of their readers by adding a few plugins that will benefit those who comment on my blog. Comments are both beneficial to the blogger (that’s me) and to the commenter (if you comment, then that is you). For me as the blogger it shows that my blog is interesting enough for people to leave comments, this of course will lead to people thinking “Hey maybe, that drunk idiot has some interesting stuff to say and I should read his blog” and then they will comment (things like “Hey I think you spilled some Captain Crunch on your commenting pants/housecoat” or “Be careful not to spill that Wild Turkey on Your Keyboard”). More comments leads to more RSS Subscribers, which then of course turns into Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems for me. For you commenting on my blog means a few things.

1. A backlink to your site (in case you missed the song I have removed the “No Follow” garbage from my blog)
2. Your latest blog post will be added to the bottom of your comment using “Comment Love”. Write a blog post with a intriguing title and people will visit your blog.
3. I will think you are awesome and have a drink for you.
.
So that’s it, comments are good for you, and they are good for me. Now is the point where you post your comment, get a “real backlink”, promote your latest blog post AND…
.
Become Awesome

Great idea you had there… I wish I could turn this option on, on Blogger (damn).

  5. Simonne: That was AWESOME, which of course makes you awesome. Keep it up and I may promote you to “Legendary!” I will have like five drinks for you!

BaseGuardian: CommentLuv is a great addition to encourage peole to comment. I would also suggest adding the plugin that removes the “no follow” tag as well. You can check out the this site for more info http://www.bumpzee.com/no-nofollow/
    .
Ren B: Be patient, I am sure that it is only a matter of time until someone finds a way to hack the plugin for Blogger.
    .
Minty: Don’t worry I already thought you were an ass ;)
besides I added these features to encourage commenting, It’s a “I scratch your back and you scratch mine” kind of situation. Comments get you easy blog promotion plus a backlink and the comments make my blog “seem” popular. Keep those comments comming!

  6. Or maybe, I’ll just program a similar feature for my upcoming website (that has a blog, duh). And this is will definitely help on the numbers of comments. By the way, are you commenting on other blogs? (not necessarilly on the ones whose owners are here commenting)

One thing that has been helping me is the number of blogs I’m subscribed to. With more info coming, it’s easier to have some interesting topic to talk about, and I didn’t even mention the fact that you can comment on a hundred of interesting and similar blogs.

    Good luck :)

(removed the commentluv on this link, so I wouldnt get a double link :))

  7. Drunk by 10..well it is noon somewhere, and it’s also warm, but it aint here! I wonder about the mystery of comments, If someone visits and takes the time to comment, I always try to recip..I think some of the bigger hitters may not have the time, or an over inflated ego.. not sure! But either way, isn’t that what “social networking” is..? If it’s a one sided conversation.. (not like the one’s we have with ourselves) what good is it doing?

  9. @Ren I am the commenting master…I have been focusing on comments for the last week and have seen a steady increase in traffic. Of course these are good comments, not the standard: “Nice blog” kind of comments, but actual comments that add and contribute to the post content.

If I ever get the “Nice blog” comments, My manservant, ‘Blog-Slappah’ will come over to your blog and slap you around ;)

  10. I loaded up my song and kicked it to your lyrics. Really great post.
I too added “commenter love” to my blog, and you’ll definitely see an increase in the amount of visitors and comments. You’ll get a lot of return visitors and a community as well.

  11. @Sue: Commenting and reciprocation is key, you are exactly right. I feel that the blog ‘Social Networking’ aspect is quite often overlooked by bloggers, especially in the type of blog that teaches or has tutorials, the comments are a great way to expand on the topic, discuss and learn more.
    .
I find that I will learn more about a topic by sharing thoughts and ideas, with other readers then I would by just reading the post.

@Sinporium: “You’ll get a lot of return visitors and a community as well.” –> I think you nailed it with that comment. Visitors are extremely important to a blogger, but more important is the community!
