Is Commenting Really Bringing Your Blog Free Web Traffic?

normarae free web trafficIf there is a way to get it for free I will take it. That is usually the way for most of us. In this case I am talking about free web traffic. For the most part, if you have a blog, you will be getting a large portion of your traffic from other blogs that you have commented on- this is usually the best way to get free web traffic. Comment on other blogs! I spend way too much time commenting on other Adsense blogs. This has been hammered into your head since day 1 of blogging of school. And again it is a great way to get free web traffic to your blog, but recently I have grown tired of how much work it is to constantly visit a blog and make a relevant comments.

If it is a popular blog then your comment will get lost in a sea of other comments, or if the blog is not popular then your comments will not be seen or click on by many other people. Even though you aren’t’ paying for the traffic from the comments, you still have to take the time to read through a post and compose a comment that is relevant, and won’t get deleted by the blog owner.

I was checking my stats to see where most of my traffic from comments was coming from, that way I could see which blogs were worth my time to continue commenting on and I found something interesting: Most of my blog posts were not coming from the actual comments I was making. They were coming from a link on the blogs main page.

It seemed that most of my traffic from commenting came from blogs that had a “recent comments” widget or a “top commentators” widget, or both. It got me thinking about how most blogs charge a monthly fee to have a 125 ad appear on their blog, and that you could have a free spot on the main page of blogs that have a “recent comments” or “top commentators” widget. I decided that I will spend most of my time reading and commenting on blogs that have either of the two previously mentioned widgets.

I think these are great ways to help yourself to some free web traffic and to also help another blogger grow their community. I personally believe that you will get more hits to your blog with this way than you would if you paid for the spots. I would suggest that you start subscribing to blogs that have a way to reward their readers through a “recent comments” or a “top commentators” widget, and make it a point to make comments daily on these blogs to yourself a link off of the main page. You may head to a blog and see that there and a lot of comments on the lowest spot and that you cold not ever write enough relevant comments to become a top commentator, but have no worries, most of these stats refresh each month, so you will have a change to be a top commentator.

Once in a while you will find a blog that rewards the “top commentators” by adding their links within a post. I saw this on a blog that I read and comment on quite often: VikingBlogger.com where the blogger shows a little link love for those that have taken the time to help grow the community.

So that is my advice on how to get some free web traffic to your blog: subscribe to blogs that have a “recent comments” and “top commentators” widgets and make daily comments in order to make it on the lists.

Here is a list of blogs that have the “Top Commentators” widget installed that you should subscribe to, and make daily comments on in order to bring free web traffic to your blog:

Living on Adsense
Viking Blogger
The University Kid

I am continually adding blogs that have these widgets installed to this list so you can begin getting on the top of these comments lists. If you would like to have your blog appear on this list all I ask is that you:

  • have the top commentators widget on your blog
  • mention and link to this article somewhere on your blog
  • leave a comment below (or contact me using the contact page) stating the blog name and link you would like to see on this list.

And then you will be added to the list of my free web traffic “top commentators” blogs. You can download the “Top Commentators Widget” from this page.

  1. Woo! I made the list.

Thats actually really interesting. I wouldn’t have ever guessed that focusing commenting on specific blogs so you can hit those “top commenters” lists would be the biggest source of hits.

Although, it does make sense. You’re far more likely to click on a link to someone who repeatedly comments and gives good information, they’re the ones who will be most likely to have something interesting on their site.

  2. Don’t underestimate the comments that you think get burried in a sea of other comments.

I get a real chuckle over the number of referrals that are coming just to see my 404 page, from a link I left in a comment to a post on cool 404 pages…about 2 years ago! It was burried in a ton of comments.

But every month, I am still getting referrals showing in my logs from it.

You know what seems to be better than comments on other blogs? Forum activity. If you are active in a busy forum, and you link to your site in your signature and profile (just don’t be spammy about it), you will get quite a bit of traffic.

So find a community that fits the content of your blog and start making friends there. In addition to getting traffic to your site, you will also find things to write about.

I am a strong believer in content and personality creating followers, so if the content is good, they will come. And if they like you, they will come. And they will tell their friends, their readers, everyone, about you.

So go outside, pour on the charm, and make some friends.

(only 8% of my traffic comes from search engines. The rest is referrals from people talking about my sites or what you can find on them…honest one-way links)

  5. I agree it will bring traffics to your website “IF” we give a quality comment. A lot of bloggers, they just want to let people know who they are, they just simply give comment without reading what is the topic, for eg:”It is great, keep up the goodjob”wow,it is fantastic”comon,if you give such comment,do u expect people will click you?Lets give a sincere comment on what is our opinion, what do u feel about the topics.Once people agrees with our statement, people will try to visit ur website and check what is tat about. No worry everyone,we are in the right trend.

  8. Something needs to be said here, and it’s just in my nature to tell it like it is, so here goes…

If you have read Chris’s post and fully understand what he’s trying to say and have read through the comments to this point, there is an additional lesson in the comments themselves, as to the dos and don’ts of commenting.

Don’t leave worthless comments, like the ones above from Carlo, Web Traffic and Ken. There is no incentive for any blogger to keep comments like those on his pages. Most bloggers consider comments like those to be ‘comment spam’ and will delete them. So it’s a wasted effort to make them.

Do put some thought and work into making your comments like Skolor, Felix Tan, and myself have. Your comments are mini-blogs within other people’s blogs. What you say and how you say it is as important as the act of leaving the comment itself, in order to drive traffic to your site.

Chris puts a lot of time and effort into writing his posts and it shows. He isn’t alone, as most bloggers that are serious about what they do also put in their share of work.

Unless you have something to add of value to an author’s work, he will have no incentive to keep your comments on his pages.

You should put in at least the same effort into comments you leave on other people’s blogs, as you do writing your own blog.

Never comment just for the sake of commenting and dropping your links on other people’s pages, like little doggie e-turds. Someone is likely to come along with the pooper scooper and put them where they belong.

  9. Hey, that’s why I wrote an entire post on why people shouldn’t underestimate commenting and so far… 44 comments :-D

But then again, all my stats have improved drastically since last week when I finally converted to WP…

  10. well I don’t comment to often and only if it’s like some personal thing so here we go.Dude your hilarious and I like your sense of humor and the info you kick out is right on time and has actually had me shift my whole momentum into a totally different focus ie
it’s not how many but what they do,meaning why have 1000 non clicking poor non buying white trash like me ripping thru clicking Entrcard or whatever and jacking off your stats, also this kind of thinking has lead to isolate certain ads,so I can finish 18-20 blogs a day.20 a day someone’s going to click something.
    Peace LOOK me up
