I’ve Been Given One Month To Live / Is It OK To Whore Your Blog?

…on Adsense. My girlfriend has gotten tired of my begin a poor blogger, and has given me the ultimatum: “Make $1200 in March from blogging or go get a job.”

I can totally understand where she is coming from. I have been leeching off of her since I quit my job mid-December. I have missed the rent (if you count March) for 3 months in a row, and honestly I have been feeling a little guilty about it.

This affects me in a big way, and as such will affect you as well. I though that blogging was going to be a simple process, make a blog, and then make some money. Kevin Costner lied, he told me that if I blogged it, they would come. Which thought meant more money. I am writing this post to let you know what is going to be happening around here. I first stated that I was going to get the traffic before I started to really monetize the blog (1st you get the traffic, then you get the…), but desperate times call for serious monetization.
pretty woman make a blogIt is going to be tough to be true to myself and keep up the constant ‘decent’ content while pushing the hardcore monetization. I just wanted to give my readers a heads up as to why all of a sudden I will be the monetizing monster. I still want to keep the monetization subtle, but at the risk of not being able to blog for a living, scares the poop out of me. I have been living the dream since December and now I do not want to give it up!

The rush to $1200 is going to be really tough. I am going to have to go from $30 per month on my blog to $1200 per month…in JUST 1 MONTH. This is going to take a miracle, so again I just ask that you guys be understanding to the fact that I have to do the impossible or give up on my dream.

I know that I could start to blog part-time like most of you, but I just don’t want to give up this freedom! So for 1 month I will become a blog whore, and then in April I will cut back and stay true to myself and blogging by going back to being “po”

This is going to be tough, as I am pretty weak in the monetization department I’ll have to do some serious research. I have started with signing up for PayPerPost and have already made $20. So far so good. Maybe I will do some kind of telethon like the “poor” television channels…

  1. Cheers and good luck. :) Becoming a professional blogger is a rough trail.

Interested in a link exchange maybe?

  2. @TYPELiFE: I don’t really do the standard link exchange like a blogroll if that is what you are suggesting, I prefer to do creative things like maybe a “mention and link in a post exchange”

Something like that, if you have any ideas I am totally open for some creative cross-promotion.

Or if you like I have the ‘Top Commentators’ widget on the sidebar with a the ‘no-follow’ removed. If you made a few extra comments your blog could end up on that widget and get your self a nice PR 3 backlink.

  3. Tell your lady friend to get a second job :P

  4. She takes care of “other things” for me besides the rent. I have a feeling that if I suggest that she get a second job to cover me I may not be “taken care of” in other respects.

  5. @TYPELiFE: Change of plans..

I pour a glass of Laphroiag and started thinking. I am always into creating a community and it is siy that I do not have some kind of blogroll to help grow my blog and others. So from here on in I will add a blogroll.

TYPELiFE and booze have changed my opinion. I have added you to my blogroll, please feel free to reciprocate.

  6. If you actually had your contact info on the “about” page (or anything at all ;-) ), you would have my gift already.

So you will have to email me (I left my main email addy with this post) and let me know.

Will greatly help you with your research on monetiz…. whatever, “money”.

I like your project. And I am up to a similar task, doing a little better than 30 bucks (one zero more…) but still way to go…

    Cheers, Martin

  7. If you want the ad clicking traffic, you have to have the content that draws in the masses. Nobody really wants to read the adsense highs & lows of your life besides a few that are dealing with the same stuff. And they aren’t really going to click the ads and make you the big bucks.

And 1 blog with 1 type of content isn’t going to cut it.

Blogs are easy to set up and Wordpress makes a great CMS for all kinds of sites. The big ad clicking crowd you should be aiming for is the myspace type of people. They are simple. They want fun. Amuse them with what they want…lots of it!

Find a way to give them something for free that they will keep coming back for more and send their friends too.

While it is nice to have one blog for a special purpose such as this one, you should be having many more and spread out into different types of content. I currently have about 15 blogs with content ranging from recipes, software reviews, free ebooks, and even posting that silly stuff people forward to me in emails. I just started another one today for flash games.

The site that makes me the most money on adsense is a directory. I just post what I find from some very specialized google searches. I am now the top result for ‘free programming ebook’.

If you can manage to make $30/month with a single blog such as this one, imaging what you could do with 50 blogs of easy to post content that the ‘I want some fun’ and ‘I want free stuff’ crowds would love.

My goal is to earn $2000/month. I have a long way to go, but I know a single blog isn’t going to do it. If you want to make blogging your job, then make it a full time job and blog ALL DAY!

And where is your ‘buy me a cup of coffee’ paypal link?

Come on…get creative and get busy! Then come back here and post about your experiences with what you are doing with the other blogs & sites. You could learn some valuable stuff worth sharing.

  8. Beer donations via Paypal ^^

I’d normally say the girlfriend is being unreasonable with only one month, but if she’s already buying the beer, taking care of “other things” and paying the rent, she’s a saint.

I agree with app, I’d span out over a few blogs and make each one a topic blog. I think one key is to choose a topic that can be branched out to cover a wider range of related topics that relate to the main. You can toss the blogs that don’t work and try again. You really have to budget time to manage, but you can do it in your pajamas with a cold one in hand once you get a rhythm going.

Once you come up with some ideas you can research some keywords and find out if they might be profitable.

Someone once told me to start all blogs on free hosts and then move them to paid IF they are making money. I have a mix of both.

  9. I think you can do it! But you need to work harder than you did in every other job you’ve ever had.

    Good luck!

  10. Buy me Coffee/Beer link…

I tried that and no one clicked on it, it didn’t really fit the blog design, so I dropped it.

If I had it would you buy me a beer?

  11. [...] despite the fact that in my post from Friday someone made a comment that stated:“Nobody really wants to read the adsense highs & lows [...]

  12. Ouch, man.

Well, you only need to increase your income by 4000%! That makes it sound even more horribly depressing than it already is :(

If it helps at all, check out blogbadly.com and send me an e-mail - I’d be glad to review your site or blogroll or something.

    Good luck.
